The main concerns here are petty crime, like pickpocketing, in crowded areas like the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, and the wild traffic. Use common sense: keep your valuables secure, and look both ways (three or four times) before crossing the street.

Safety in Luxor and Aswan

Once you travel south to Luxor and Aswan, the pace slows down considerably. Life revolves around the Nile, and these cities feel more manageable than Cairo. The primary challenge here isn’t crime, but the “hassle factor.” You will be approached constantly by people trying to sell you a carriage ride, a felucca ride, or a tour.

In Aswan, we must have been offered a boat ride a hundred times just walking along the river. A firm but friendly “La, shukran” (No, thank you) and continuing to walk is the best way to handle it. It can be tiring, but it’s more of an annoyance than a genuine safety threat.

Safety in Red Sea Resorts (Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada)

The Red Sea resorts are a completely different world. Places like Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada exist in a “resort bubble” with a heavy focus on tourism and security. You will often pass through a security checkpoint on the roads leading into these areas. Within the resorts themselves, the atmosphere is relaxed and the biggest safety concerns are the same as any other beach destination: watch your belongings and don’t overdo it in the sun.

This is a classic travel scam worldwide. A driver might tell you their meter is broken and then quote you a ridiculous price at the end of your ride. Our guide in Giza was fantastic, but he was very keen for us to visit a “government-approved” papyrus institute. We went along with it and it was an interesting, if lengthy, sales pitch. Many guides or drivers receive a commission for bringing tourists to these specific shops. It is perfectly fine to politely decline by saying, “Thank you for the offer, but we’d prefer to spend more time at the temple.” A good guide will always respect your wishes.

Photo “Assistance” for a Fee

At major sites, someone may offer to take a photo of you from a “perfect spot.” After they’ve taken a few shots with your camera, they will then demand a hefty tip (baksheesh) for their service. If you don’t want to pay for this, just politely refuse any offers for help with your photos from the start.

To enter Jasper National Park, you must have a valid Park Pass. You can buy it at the park gates upon entry or online in advance.

Daily Pass (2025 rates): $10.50 CAD per adult or $21.00 per vehicle/group.

Discovery Pass (Annual): $72.25 CAD per adult or $145.25 for a family/group. This gives you unlimited access to all of Canada’s national parks for 12 months. If you plan to visit for more than a few days or see other parks like Banff, this is the best value.

3. Athabasca Falls

4. Toe of the Athabasca Glacier

5. Jasper Discovery Trail

Trailhead: Multiple access points near Pyramid Lake.

The Pyramid Lake Loop is a great choice for an afternoon hike with beautiful views, located just a few minutes from the town of Jasper. The trail climbs through the forest to viewpoints overlooking the iconic Pyramid Mountain and Pyramid Lake. There are many different intersecting routes in the area, but most lead back to the main trail. It’s also a dog-friendly trail, as long as your canine companion is on a leash.

Dave & Deb’s Tip: For the best photos of Pyramid Mountain reflected in the water, make sure you take the short walk over the bridge to Pyramid Island either before or after your hike. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Jasper for a reason.

Difficult Hikes in Jasper (10km+)

For experienced hikers looking for a serious challenge, these trails offer some of the most expansive and rewarding views in the entire park. Be prepared with sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, and bear spray.

11. Bald Hills

Length: 15 km (9.3 miles) out & back

Elevation Gain: 780 m (2559 ft)

Difficulty: Difficult

Approx. Time: 5 – 7 hours

Trailhead: Maligne Lake parking area (furthest lot).

For views high above the treeline, nowhere is better than the summit of the Bald Hills. The trail follows a wide fire road for most of the climb, with a steep shortcut option available for those who want it. As you gain elevation, the trees thin out and the views of Maligne Lake and the surrounding mountain ranges become increasingly spectacular. The final push to the summit ridge opens up to a stunning 360-degree panorama.

Dave & Deb’s Tip: The final push to the true summit beyond the main viewpoint is a bit of a scramble, but it’s where you’ll leave 90% of the other hikers behind. The 360-degree panorama from the very top is one of the best in the Canadian Rockies.

12. Opal Hills Loop

Length: 8.0 km (5 miles) loop

Elevation Gain: 517 m (1696 ft)

Difficulty: Difficult

Approx. Time: 3 – 5 hours

Trailhead: Maligne Lake parking area (near the boat house).

Don’t let the shorter distance fool you; the Opal Hills Loop is a steep and strenuous workout that takes you straight up. The trail climbs relentlessly through the forest before opening into a beautiful alpine meadow that is often filled with wildflowers. This hike is a great choice if you’re looking for a challenging climb with rewarding views and fewer crowds than the nearby Bald Hills trail.

People call this one of the world’s best drives, and for once, the hype is completely justified. The Cabot Trail is a 298 km highway that loops around Nova Scotia’s North Shore, hugging mountainsides and offering incredible views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Our best advice is to give it time. The biggest mistake you can make is trying to rush it in a single day. Take two or three days, pull over at every lookout, and explore the small villages along the way.

Hike the Skyline Trail

If you only do one hike in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, make it this one. The Skyline Trail is famous for its boardwalk that descends a steep headland, giving you a commanding view over the rugged coastline.

It’s an iconic Canadian view for a reason, and it’s an especially popular spot for sunset. Keep your eyes peeled for moose; we’ve often spotted them grazing in the meadows near the start of the trail.

Visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site

We weren’t sure what to expect here, but this museum in the town of Baddeck is genuinely fascinating. Alexander Graham Bell was so much more than the guy who invented the telephone; he worked on everything from airplanes and hydrofoils to giant kites.

The site is full of his real artifacts, inventions, and personal effects. It’s a great look into the life of a true genius and a perfect rainy-day activity.

Explore the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site

This is not your average historic site. Louisbourg is a massive, living reconstruction of an 18th-century French fortified town. The scale of it is hard to comprehend until you are walking its streets. It is actually North America’s largest historic reconstruction project.

You can easily spend a full day here interacting with costumed interpreters, watching blacksmiths at work, and even eating fresh-baked bread from the period bakery. It’s one of the most immersive historical experiences we’ve had in Canada.

Go Whale Watching

The waters off the coast of Cape Breton are a rich feeding ground for several species of whales. Taking a zodiac tour from a town like Chéticamp or Pleasant Bay gives you a fantastic chance of seeing them up close.

There’s nothing quite like the moment a pod of pilot whales surfaces near your boat. It’s a powerful reminder of just how wild this corner of the country really is.

Things to Do on the South Shore

Nova Scotia’s South Shore is picture-postcard territory. This is where you’ll find the quaint fishing villages, historic lighthouses, and colourful seaside homes the province is famous for. It’s a fantastic area for a scenic, relaxing drive.

Explore Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse

Peggy’s Cove is one of the most photographed places in Canada, and it lives up to the hype. The classic lighthouse perched on a mountain of massive granite boulders is a scene you won’t forget.

Our best advice is to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the peak tour bus crowds. And please, respect the warning signs and stay off the wet, black rocks. The waves here are unpredictable and dangerous.

Wander the Streets of Lunenburg

Lunenburg is a personal favourite of ours. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the entire old town is a protected historic area, and its unique colonial architecture is incredibly well-preserved.

We love just wandering the hilly streets and admiring the colourful buildings. It’s also the home port of the famous Bluenose II schooner, so be sure to check if it’s in the harbour when you visit.

Visit Mahone Bay and the Three Churches

Just down the road from Lunenburg is the lovely town of Mahone Bay. It’s famous for one iconic view: the three historic churches that line up perfectly along the waterfront.

While it makes for a beautiful photo, the town itself is worth exploring. It’s full of great little artisan shops and cafes and has a more relaxed feel than some of its more famous neighbours.

Go Kayaking in Blue Rocks

If you want to see what a real, working fishing village looks like, head to Blue Rocks. Located just a few minutes outside Lunenburg, this tiny community of fishing shacks, fishing boats, and stacked lobster traps feels a world away from the tourist track.

The waters around the scattered islands are quite sheltered, making it one of our favourite spots for a guided sea kayaking tour.

Hike at Kejimkujik National Park Seaside

While the main part of Kejimkujik National Park is inland, the Seaside adjunct is a fantastic stop on the South Shore. The Harbour Rocks Trail is an easy 5.2 km hike that takes you to a beautiful coastline of turquoise water and white sand. We always see seals sunning themselves on the rocks here.

Bay of Fundy & Annapolis Valley Experiences

This part of Nova Scotia is all about dramatic natural forces. The Bay of Fundy is home to the highest tides on Earth, creating a landscape that changes completely twice a day. Just inland, the fertile Annapolis Valley offers a much gentler, but equally interesting, experience.

Experience the World’s Highest Tides

It’s hard to wrap your head around the scale of the tides here until you see the evidence. Twice a day, 160 billion tonnes of water flow in and out of the bay, causing the water level to rise as much as 16 metres (52 feet).

The key is to visit a spot like Hall’s Harbour at low tide and then return six hours later for high tide. Seeing the fishing boats go from sitting on the muddy ocean floor to floating high above is the best way to appreciate this natural wonder.

Go Tidal Bore Rafting

This is one of the most unique adventures we’ve had in Canada. You head out on a zodiac on the Shubenacadie River while the water is low, and then you ride the incoming tidal bore, a wave created by the massive tide, as it rushes up the river.

You will be crashing through huge, muddy waves and getting completely soaked. It’s an absolute thrill and something you won’t forget.

Walk on the Ocean Floor at Burntcoat Head Park

This is the very spot where the world’s highest tides were officially recorded. At low tide, the water recedes, allowing you to walk on the ocean floor for kilometres. You can explore the tide pools and see the “flowerpot” sea stacks up close.

You absolutely must check the tide schedule before you go. The water comes in much faster than you’d think. You can even have a unique dining experience by eating on the ocean floor at Burntcoat Head Park. How fun is that?

Go Wine Tasting in the Annapolis Valley

After the wild adventures on the bay, the Annapolis Valley offers a perfect change of pace. This is Nova Scotia’s wine country, producing excellent cool-climate wines.

We recommend visiting a few vineyards like Lightfoot & Wolfville or Domaine de Grand Pré to sample Tidal Bay, the region’s signature crisp, white wine. It’s a great way to spend a relaxed afternoon.

Visit Grand-Pré National Historic Site

This powerful UNESCO World Heritage Site tells the story of the Acadian people and their deportation, known as the Grand Dérangement, in the 1750s. It’s a somber but incredibly important piece of Canadian history.

The site itself is beautiful and peaceful, with a memorial church and gardens overlooking the original dykelands that the Acadians created.

Eat a Lobster Roll

You will see lobster rolls on just about every menu, and for good reason. A proper Nova Scotia lobster roll isn’t complicated or fussy, it’s just a generous pile of fresh lobster meat, lightly dressed with mayo or melted butter, and served in a toasted, top-split bun.

The best ones we’ve had often come from small, unassuming seafood shacks by the side of the road. Don’t overthink it; just order one whenever you get the chance.

Try Digby Scallops

The town of Digby is home to one of the world’s largest scallop fishing fleets, and the scallops from these waters are famous for being incredibly fresh, sweet, and tender.

Whether you have them perfectly pan-seared or lightly fried, they are a true taste of the region. We always make a point to order them when we see them on a menu.

Indulge in a Donair

This one might surprise you, but the donair is the official food of Halifax. It’s a unique take on the Turkish doner kebab, made with spiced ground beef that’s sliced from a vertical spit and served on a warm pita with tomatoes and onions.

What makes it a Halifax original is the sauce: a sweet, garlicky concoction made from evaporated milk, vinegar, and sugar. It might sound a little strange, but it’s a local obsession and the ultimate late-night snack. You have to try it at least once.

Best Time to Visit Nova Scotia

The most popular time to visit is during the summer months of July and August. The weather is warm and sunny, and everything is open and in full swing. However, this is also the busiest and most expensive time.

Our favourite time to visit is in September. The weather is still beautiful, the summer crowds have thinned out, and the fall colours begin to appear in the Cape Breton Highlands. Spring can be unpredictable and rainy, while winter is reserved for the truly hardy.

Getting to Nova Scotia

You have a few options for getting to the province, depending on where you’re coming from.

By Air: The Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) is the main gateway to the province, with connections across Canada and internationally.

By Car: If you’re driving, the main entry point is via the Trans-Canada Highway from neighbouring New Brunswick.

By Ferry: Vehicle ferries operate from Prince Edward Island, Saint John, New Brunswick, and even Bar Harbor, Maine (USA), offering a scenic alternative.

Later that afternoon, we made our way to Lake Laurentian Conservation Area, and it ended up being one of our favourite spots in the city. With over 60 kilometers of trails, you can go as big or small as you want. We stuck with three short hikes, and each one delivered serious wow factor.

Our first was the NASA Trail, a 15-minute walk that passes the site of a former satellite observatory. It’s a quiet path with a big presence, a reminder that Sudbury isn’t just about mining and regrowth. It’s also a place where science has literally reached for the stars.

We continued to the Duck Trail and the Beaver Pond Loop, and this is where Sudbury’s transformation really hits you. The rocky moonscape we’d seen in old photos is gone. In its place? Lush forest, rich wetlands, and peaceful trails that wind through some of the most resilient nature we’ve ever walked. It’s hard to believe this was once written off as wasteland. We took a sunrise, midday, and sunset stroll along the Bell Park Boardwalk, a 2-kilometre path that hugs the shoreline of Ramsey Lake, the second-largest lake in the world entirely within city limits.

We passed joggers, families, students, and even a friendly local who handed us peanuts to feed the squirrels. It was one of those small moments that said a lot about the city. Sudbury has put its prosperity back into the community, and places like Bell Park are proof.

This is where you’ll also find boat launches, picnic areas, a supervised beach, and a commemorative plaque marking the 10 millionth tree planted during the regreening campaign. It’s a beautiful spot to relax after a day of hiking or to kick off a full day of sightseeing.

Onaping Falls: Where Art Meets Apollo

Before we left town, we made the scenic 40-minute drive northwest to Onaping Falls. It’s not just a beautiful place, it’s one of the most fascinating mashups of Canadian art history and space science we’ve ever come across.

The A.Y. Jackson Lookout offers sweeping views of the falls, which plunge 55 metres into the ancient Sudbury Basin, formed by a meteorite impact 1.85 billion years ago. Jackson painted this scene in 1953, and when you’re standing at the lookout, it’s easy to see why. You feel the same artistic energy, raw and real, that the Group of Seven captured on canvas.

But here’s what blew our minds: This same geological site drew the attention of NASA. In 1971, Apollo astronauts came to Sudbury to study the shattercones and breccia rocks at Onaping Falls. They wanted to understand what they’d be walking on up there, and Sudbury was their test site.

And it worked. When Apollo 16 touched down, astronaut John Young looked around the lunar landscape and said:“It looks like a Sudbury breccia.”That’s right, Sudbury is the only Canadian city ever mentioned from the surface of the moon.

We were just as fascinated by the shattercone displays (from Sudbury’s meteorite impact site) as we were by the butterfly room, the live animal exhibits, and the space exploration gallery.

One thing we noticed right away is how accessible the facility is, with wide ramps, elevators, and exhibit layouts that are thoughtful for visitors of all ages and abilities.

If you’re visiting with family, prepare to spend at least half a day here, especially if you catch a film at the IMAX with Laser Theatre, Northern Ontario’s only true giant-screen cinema. We recommend pairing your visit with a walk along the Bell Park boardwalk, especially if you didn’t get to it earlier. Sunset on Ramsey Lake is pure magic.

Dynamic Earth: Go Deep into Mining History

Next up: Dynamic Earth, home of Sudbury’s most iconic attraction, the Big Nickel. But this isn’t your average photo stop. It’s the gateway to one of the most immersive science experiences in the country.

We grabbed our hard hats and headed straight underground. That’s right, you descend seven storeys down into a real mine tunnel and walk through the history of mining in Canada. From the grueling, hand-drilled methods of the early 1900s to today’s state-of-the-art, remote-controlled operations, the tour walks you through the real deal.

It’s the kind of experience that gives you a whole new appreciation for Canadian industry and innovation. And the guides? Fantastic. They shared stories that made us laugh, reflect, and genuinely respect the tough, smart work that built this city.

Outside, you’ll find more interactive exhibits, a mining lab, and one of our favorite photo ops, the 9-metre-tall Big Nickel, a massive replica of the 1951 Canadian coin. It’s kitschy in the best way, and it proudly reminds you that Sudbury’s mining legacy still runs deep.

Summer Festivals and Live Events

We would love to visit during festival season. There is the Northern Lights Festival Boréal, Canada’s longest-running music festival, which draws incredible talent from across the country and beyond. Families, friends, and musicians fill the parks and stages.

Another local favourite is the Up Here Festival, which blends music, art, and massive murals in a way that completely transforms downtown. You’ll stumble on bold new street art and hear everything from indie rock to throat singing. It’s modern, inclusive, and uniquely Sudburian. We especially loved the mural of Alex Trebek. A Sudbury native.

And don’t skip the Indigenous cultural celebrations and pow wows. These are some of the most meaningful and beautiful events, filled with drumming, dancing, and connection to the land. If you get the chance, go.

Where to Eat, Drink, and Celebrate the North

Sudbury’s food scene is as down-to-earth and proud as the city itself. You won’t find a lot of pretension here, but you will find seriously good eats, craft cocktails, and some of the coolest hidden spots in Northern Ontario. We came hungry. We left impressed.

We started our mornings at Salute Coffee Roasters and Beni Rise & Shine and Anna Laura Patisserie, where the espresso is next-level and the vibe is relaxed and welcoming. If you’re a coffee snob (or just need fuel for the trail), this is your go-to.

For lunch, you can’t miss Deluxe Hamburgers, a true Sudbury institution. Locals jokingly call this a “one-arch town” because Deluxe has been holding its ground for decades despite the Golden Arches opening up right across from it. The chicken on a bun and fresh-cut fries are legendary, and it’s easily the best deal in town.

Dinner was a whole adventure in itself. One night, we went full retro at Mr. Prime Rib, a classic steakhouse where the beef is king and the service is old-school impeccable. It’s the kind of place where your cutlery is polished, your prime rib is perfect, and the horseradish bites back.

Another night, we stepped into full Canadiana mode at Made In Canada Eatery. It’s quirky, cozy, and totally fun, with walls covered in photos of Canadian icons, and a Caesar with Canadian whisky that deserves its own spot in the Hall of Fame. If you’re visiting for the first time, this place sets the tone for what Northern hospitality is all about.

Looking for wood-fired pizzas or a casual upscale vibe? Ripe Restaurant serves delicious, crisp pies straight from the oven, while The Daventry Kitchen & Bar offers a solid pub menu with craft beer and cozy vibes. We also loved Gloria’s Restaurant, a Sudbury classic since 1952, and Eddie’s Restaurant, which locals love for its family-style dining room and separate sports bar. Bonus trivia: “Shorsey” was filmed here, yes, that Shorsey.

But the night doesn’t have to end with dinner.

After eating our way through Sudbury, we capped things off at The Night Owl, a secret speakeasy you absolutely have to experience. Picture this: you head down an alley, find an old-school payphone, and give the password. The hostess greets you and leads you through a hidden door behind a wall of books. Inside, it’s a full-on 1920s-style cocktail lounge, with red velvet, jazz vibes, and the best Manhattans and Old Fashioneds this side of Toronto. It’s one of the coolest spots in town, but make sure to book in advance; it’s exclusive for a reason.

And if you’re up for one more round? Head to The Laughing Buddha for craft cocktails and globally inspired dishes on one of the city’s best patios. Then walk next door to the Townhouse Tavern, a dive bar with heart where Stompin’ Tom Connors found the inspiration for his famous anthem, Sudbury Saturday Night. You can even snap a photo with his statue in the park nearby.

For our farewell dinner, we had an incredible meal at Sapporo Ichibang, where authentic Japanese and Korean dishes warmed us up from the inside out. Everything was fresh, flavourful, and comforting.

A Relaxing Finish at Ezentials Nordic Lounge

After a few days of hiking, biking, and sightseeing, we wrapped up our Sudbury trip with something a little more indulgent, an afternoon at the Nordic Lounge at Ezentials. This indoor wellness spa was pure bliss. Think cedar sauna, eucalyptus steam room, cold-mist showers, and dimmed lights with chill music in the background.

We grabbed a couple of robes, sipped a glass of wine in the lounge, and just let it all go. We even tried the Starlight Suite, where we experienced vibrational sound therapy in a dark, star-lit room designed for deep relaxation. It was like floating through space while our brains hit the reset button.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn by Hilton, and it hit all the marks, breakfast included, a solid gym, a pool to unwind, and a super convenient location. It’s the kind of place where you see business travelers, especially from the mining sector, rubbing shoulders with families and road trippers. It felt like the heartbeat of the city passed right through the lobby.

Rates for a stay like ours run around $800 to $1,000 for four nights, depending on the season. But with breakfast included (and very good at that), it covers a lot of mornings, offering more flexibility to splurge at dinner.

Walking through the empty hotel and company store at Fayette feels like stepping onto a movie set.

We apologize that our forests, after decades of record heat, drought, and corporate deforestation (some of it by your own timber giants), had the audacity to catch fire and interrupt your BBQs and lake weekends.

But since you’re so concerned, let’s review the scoreboard:

When California was engulfed in flames, Canada sent water bombers. No letter. No whining. Just help. Because that’s what friends do.

We routinely send highly trained Canadian firefighters to California, Oregon, and Washington when your forests are burning down faster than a rant from your president. We don’t send a letter complaining about the smog drifting north, we send help.

When your hospitals were overwhelmed and out of PPE during the pandemic, we shipped masks and gloves south. At the same time, Trump threatened to cut us off. No letter. Just help.

When 9/11 happened, we took in 33,000 stranded passengers and fed them in Gander, Newfoundland. We didn’t send a letter complaining about our tourism season. We opened our doors. You might try it sometime instead of burning the planet for campaign cash.

Meanwhile, you send us… a letter.

You write with concern about your “ability to go outside and safely breathe.” We’re concerned about that too. We’ve been concerned for decades as your corporations have belched more carbon into our shared atmosphere than almost any other country on Earth. You lecture us about “active forest management” while simultaneously gutting your own environmental protections and subsidizing the very fossil fuel industry that’s setting our planet on fire.

All the while, we’re actually investing in green energy to prevent these fires before they start. You might try it sometime instead of burning the planet for campaign cash.

You want to talk about what’s “ruining the summer”? Let’s talk about the raw sewage and industrial waste you’ve been dumping into the Great Lakes for a century. Let’s talk about the invasive species that hitch a ride in your ships and decimate our ecosystems. Let’s talk about the acid rain from your factories that has poisoned our lakes and forests for generations.

Oh, and let’s talk about that “outdoor recreation” you’re so worried about. You know, the same outdoors you’ve been paving over with pipelines, fracking, and oil rigs. The same air you’ve been happily polluting for decades, accelerating the climate crisis that makes these wildfires worse.

Your letter mentions arson, but conveniently ignores the primary accelerant for these fires: climate change. A crisis you have actively lobbied to ignore.

So please, spare us the lecture. Don’t you dare complain about the smoke in your sky when you have helped build the fire.

You accuse us of “a lack of forest management”? Please. Our forests are twice the size of the state of Texas. And guess what? We didn’t spend decades denying climate change while burning coal like it was going out of style.

We Canadians love our summers, too. We also love being able to breathe. But most of all, we value friendship and reciprocity. Things that are clearly in short supply south of the border these days. Real friends show up with buckets, not complaint letters.

If you’re so desperate for fresh air, maybe stop voting for politicians who think the only green policy worth supporting is the color of their campaign donations.

Instead of sending snarky letters, how about sending fire crews? Or maybe instead of funneling your giant defense budget into more tanks, border walls, and that Big Beautiful Bill budget that props up ICE and billionaires, you could help fight actual global threats. Like climate change?
