Best places to stay in Barcelona
This guide will explore where to stay in Barcelona in depth. We’ll cover the six best neighborhoods to stay in Barcelona, plus the best hotel choices in each area for budget, mid-range, and luxury travelers. Let’s get started.
1. Gothic Quarter – Barri Gòtic
The Gothic Quarter is the best neighborhood to stay in Barcelona for first-timers. Located in the city center, the Gothic Quarter (Also called Barri Gotic in Catalan) is within walking distance of many attractions, tapas bars, and the main pedestrian street of La Rambla.
It gets its name from the neighborhood’s Gothic architecture. The neighborhood is packed with history, dramatic architecture, and countless photo opportunities. The Gothic Quarter is where the Romans first claimed the land, and sections of Roman walls remain. Apart from these ruins, you’ll find medieval structures and, in the center of the neighborhood, La Seu, a massive Gothic cathedral.
The Best Hotels in the Gothic Quarter
The Gothic Quarter is the neighborhood everyone flocks to during the day, so count yourself lucky if you choose to stay here as you can have it yourself in the quieter hours. Wandering the Gothic Quarter at night is one of the most magical things to do in Barcelona.
Luxury: Mercer Hotel Barcelona
This stunning luxury hotel is where to stay in the Gothic Quarter if you want to indulge. The Mercer Hotel Barcelona has modern amenities, including a rooftop terrace, and a minimalistic-design outdoor pool. The Mercer is one of Barcelona’s best boutique hotels and offers a great central location and fantastic views over the Gothic Quarter. See rates on Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Its modern rooms are equally exciting. Pick a room or suite; all options come with a rainfall shower and complimentary designer toiletries. To treat yourself, choose rooms with original features like stone walls and exposed beams, or pick a balcony room for private views over Barcelona’s most iconic neighborhood. We stayed here and found it to be the best location for walking to many top Barcelona attractions.
Mid-Range: Petit Palace Boqueria Garden
Petit Palace Boqueria Garden is a picture of sophisticated hospitality. The four-star property is sleek and upscale, with a beautiful interior garden that offers peaceful solace from the chaos of the Gothic Quarter outside. Some of the trees in the interior garden are hundreds of years old, and the property is listed as a protected heritage site. Check rates on Booking.com / TripAdvisor
You can choose between rooms or suites, the latter of which comes with a terrace and garden view. And, when you do venture out, it is just minutes from Las Ramblas and the Basilica de Santa Maria del Pi.
Budget: Itaca Hostel
Itaca Hostel proves that a tight budget won’t stop you from staying in the Gothic Quarter. This hostel is a budget-friendly option just a minute’s walk from Barcelona Cathedral. You’ll be right in the heart of the quarter’s stunning architecture and flurry of entertainment. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Opt for a dorm or private room. There’s also a dining room, communal kitchen, and a living room to enjoy. Itaca Hostel has a bright, fun vibe – great for meeting new people and getting excited about exploring Barcelona.
VRBO: Casa Cosi
This property is smack bang in the center of the Gothic Quarter. The three-bedroom apartment sleeps up to six people. It is the perfect base to experience the busy Gothic neighborhood when you want to stay in Barcelona. Even peering down off of your traditional balcony will feel movie-set-worthy. Check it out on VRBO
Casa Cosi has been renovated and has a modern, comfortable style. You will still spot traditional elements, like its balcony and unique Spanish tiles. Ready to experience comfortable living in Barcelona’s old town? Casa Cosi is for you.
Things to do in the Gothic Quarter
Apart from its atmosphere and great central location, Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is one of the best neighborhoods for attractions too. The old city center is packed with attractions.
Visiting The Cathedral (La Seu) is easily the main thing to do in the Gothic Quarter. It is impressive from the outside but beautiful on the inside. We visited it during our first visit to Barcelona.
Carrer del Bisbe (Bishop’s Street) is the second most iconic attraction in the Gothic Quarter. The street has a narrow, neo-gothic bridge known as Bishops Bridge that crosses overhead. The crowd walks under the ornate bridge, usually scrambling for pictures along the way. If you book a walking tour, it will definitely include Carrer del Bisbe.
Museu d’Historia de La Ciutat is another brilliant attraction. It is excellently paired with a visit to Placa del Rei, a medieval public square dating back to the 14th century.
When exploring the Gothic Quarter, leave time to stop and listen to the buskers along the way. It’s not unusual to find flamenco guitarists sitting on small stools at alleyway entrances as you wind your way through the cobbled, medieval streets.
Of course, you also have easy access to Las Ramblas which is the most famous street in Barcelona. This stretch of boulevard divides El Raval and the Gothic Quarter. Las Ramblas is renowned for its larger-than-life personality, with street performers, pop-up stalls, tapas bars, and plenty of organized events. Barcelona’s Las Ramblas is the first place you will probably end up exploring in Barcelona.
The Gothic Quarter is where to stay in Barcelona if you want to be just a short walk from beautiful historic buildings and in the heart of all the action.
2. El Born
El Born is the home of the city’s nightlife and where to stay in Barcelona if you love partying. In the day, you can zip around the medieval alleyways window shopping (or actually treating yourself) at designer boutiques. In the evening, these boutique shops close their shutters, and cocktail, samba, and tapas bars take over.
El Born is fun and fashionable – from sunrise to sunrise. It is the perfect neighborhood for anyone wanting to party when they stay in Barcelona. You’ll have fun visiting alone, as a couple, or with a big group of friends.
El Born is where to stay in Barcelona if you want nightlife and shopping in a historic area. The neighborhood is one of those electric places with a buzz every hour of the day. However, it also has a quieter side, with fewer crowds and brilliant access to green space. El Born’s balance is relaxing and fun – perhaps the best of both worlds?
The Best Hotels in El Born
Luxury: Grand Hotel Central
Grand Hotel Central is the best luxury hotel in El Born. The five-star property is ultra-chic, from the soft use of backlighting in its rooms to its bold statement with its rooftop infinity pool. Mid-Range: Hotel Ciutadella Barcelona
Hotel Ciutadella Barcelona is laidback but classy. Its location is a significant draw and is just a few minutes away from Passeig del Born. However, its interior is just as exciting, and you’ll have a comfortable stay at this four-star property. From its tufted headboards to its floral walls, Hotel Ciutadella Barcelona is pleasantly designed for you to relax after a busy day of sightseeing. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Guests can opt for a buffet breakfast, and the hotel offers room service if they are tempted by a lazy morning with breakfast in bed.
Budget: Pension Ciudadela
Pension Ciudadela might be a one-star hotel, but its reviews are stellar. This classy property is the perfect budget-friendly base in El Born. It has the price of a hostel but the hotel experience, which is excellent for those who aren’t keen on hostel life but want to stick to a budget. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
The hotel’s room choices are fantastic, and most have French balconies for private views over the city. Guests also access a shared lounge with a microwave, fridge, hot drink-making facilities, and a kid’s play area.
VRBO: El Born studio with exposed beams
This gorgeous studio is a visually aesthetic base in the center of El Born. Its design is trendy enough to fit in with Barcelona’s most outgoing neighborhood. You’ll love the stone-feature walls and exposed wooden beams.
The studio features not just one but three balconies, and it overlooks the church of Saint Maria del Mar. Guests can access an additional communal terrace with views over El Born. See it on VRBO
Things to do in El Born
El Born is one of the best places to stay in Barcelona for nightlife. It is a trendy Barcelona neighborhood situated just next to the Gothic Quarter. Those who choose to stay in El Born will still be in the city center, just a short walk from some of its most impressive architecture and attractions.
So, where does El Born come into its own? It’s nightlife and hospitality. It is not just shopping, eating, and partying in El Born either. The neighborhood has plenty of attractions and activities to fill in your day.
The most popular attraction in El Born is the Picasso Museum. In case you didn’t know, Picasso lived in Barcelona while in exile during the Franco rulership. The Picasso Museum is the perfect place to learn more about the artist and his relationship with Barcelona. The museum also has thousands of his works and the collection is ever-growing, so you won’t be stuck for artwork to admire.
On a sunny day, Parc de la Ciutadella is one of the best outdoor things to do in El Born. Parc de la Ciutadella is the largest downtown park in Barcelona and is loved by many. The park has a massive lake, monuments dotted along the pedestrian walkways, and musicians set up busking. We love how El Born is right next to an enormous area of green space, and it provides a beautiful place to unwind outside of the neighborhood’s narrow streets. This is partially what makes El Born different and more relaxing than the Gothic Quarter.
3. Eixample
Eixample is one of the best places to stay in Barcelona if you are looking for a luxury experience and to explore the works of Gaudi. You’ll find Gaudi’s designs across the neighborhood, like the art nouveau basilica Sagrada Familia and Casa Mila mansion.
The neighborhood is still relatively central, and you can reach the Gothic Quarter in 25 minutes on foot. Similarly, it is still busy and trendy, with a lively nightlife and plenty of independent shops to explore during the day.
The Best Hotels in Eixample
Luxury: Monument Hotel
Monument Hotel is a modern five-star hotel. It is where to stay in Barcelona if you want a dreamy, luxurious base to experience the city. The hotel is set in a neo-Gothic mansion built in 1896. The property is just 300 meters away from Gaudi’s Casa Batllo. Ig has a warm but stately atmosphere, with classy and comfortable furnishings. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Guests have a heated rooftop pool, spa, 24/7 gym, and an on-site florist to enjoy. The room options also have thoughtful details, including heated floors in the en-suite bathrooms. Standard rooms include parquet floors and brick wall features, and suites add a kitchen area and whirlpool tub to the layout.
Mid-Range: Hotel Condes de Barcelona
Hotel Condes de Barcelona is a chic, mid-range alternative. The property also offers an outdoor pool and rooftop bar, but the design style is much more sleek and upscale. You can expect to relax with a cocktail rather than a party. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Hotel Condes de Barcelona was actually a former palace, and the building dates back to the 19th century. You wouldn’t be able to tell, though, and it features modern decor, including a bright white spiral staircase. The hotel also has a gym and solarium for guests to use when they aren’t exploring Barcelona. And some rooms offer balconies or terraces if you want private views.
Budget: Sant Jordi Hostels Rock Palace
Sant Jordi Hostels Rock Palace is a fantastic three-star hostel in the center of Eixample. The ‘lively’ hostel is perfect for the budget traveler looking for a fun hostel, and the dormitory rooms are the best places to make new friends. Of course, for those who like to retreat to a personal area, you can always book a private room and socialize in the common areas. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
The common areas are excellent. The seasonal rooftop pool and a bar with a rock’n’roll lounge are always popular. And there is also an outdoor patio, dining room, and guest kitchen.
VRBO: Luxury two-bedroom apartment
The owners of this apartment quite rightly emphasize its ‘exclusive’ location. You’ll be minutes away from some of the most famous architecture in Barcelona. Gaudi’s revered works Casa Batllo and La Pedrera sit just around the corner. Check it out on VRBO
The apartment itself has two bedrooms, each with en-suites. And from your lounge, you can look down on Passeig de Gracia through a vast, stately window amongst abundant natural lighting. Worried about the noise? Don’t be. The apartment is installed with soundproof double windows and has the maximum noise insulation possible.
Things to do in Eixample
When it comes to things to do in Eixample, La Sagrada Familia shoots right to the top. Many people consider the basilica a symbol of Barcelona.
Gaudi originally planned for the basilica to be a Roman Catholic church. Instead, the architectural genius wound up creating a modernist masterpiece that took around 140 years to build. The basilica is full of biblical allegories and fascinating details, so allow plenty of time to tour the building inside and out.
Passeig de Gràcia is another top attraction in Eixample. The avenue is lined by stunning buildings, including two designed by Gaudi; Casa Batllo and Casa Mila.
Casa Mila (La Pedrera) is an incredible place to stop by at the end of the day as it hosts rooftop jazz performances in the evening. Passeig de Gràcia is ornate with purpose-designed details – even featuring tiles designed by Gaudi to line the street. Walking Passeig de Gràcia is also a logical way to explore Eixample, considering it links together many of the neighborhood’s best attractions.
Regarding dining out, it is worth noting that Eixample has many tasty seafood restaurants, tapas bars and other great restaurants. Chao Pescao and Cerveseria Catalana are two favorites. Treat yourself.
4. La Barceloneta
La Barceloneta is where to stay in Barcelona if you secretly want a beach holiday. The neighborhood offers almost direct beach access to La Barceloneta Beach. Yet, it is still a short walk from major attractions. A win, win for those wanting to balance beach time and sightseeing. You’ll find La Barceloneta Beach lined by beach bars and seafood restaurants, and we recommend Mar Beach Bar for the tastiest, most refreshing drinks.
Best Hotels in La Barceloneta
Luxury: W Barcelona
W Barcelona is where to stay in Barcelona for ultra-luxury. W Barcelona is set on the beachfront on the Barceloneta boardwalk. This stunning hotel has a rooftop swimming pool with ocean views, plus a rooftop terrace to relax on with a drink during the evening. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Even some of the rooms and suites have sea views, a unique quality in Barcelona. Not many properties in the city offer the caliber of location that W Barcelona does, so think yourself lucky if you decide to treat yourself to a stay. Further optional room amenities include kitchenettes, private terraces, dining rooms, living rooms, and whirlpool tubs.
Mid-Range: Hotel 54 Barceloneta
Hotel 54 Barceloneta is a smart mid-range option when staying in La Barceloneta. This boutique hotel features modern rooms with tile floors and bold furnishings. Facility-wise, guests have a rooftop terrace with comfortable loungers to enjoy, plus an on-site cafe and bar. There’s an optional breakfast that you can opt-in for as well.
This modern hotel is Beachfront and trendy – what more could you want? Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Budget: Sea Hostel Barcelona
Sea Hostel Barcelona isn’t budget-friendly compared to the rest of our budget options. However, it is the cheapest place to stay in La Barceloneta, which has limited accommodation choices since it is primarily residential. If you want something more affordable, consider staying in El Born and walking into La Barceloneta when you want to visit. Booking.com
Sea Hostel Barcelona is a stunning spot, though. You’ll be staying beachfront and can choose between a dorm and private rooms. The hostel offers a bar and a shared kitchen for guests to enjoy. There’s also free wifi.
VRBO: Port view apartment in Barceloneta
This apartment is a dreamy opportunity to stay in Barcelona and overlook its beautiful port – dotted with private luxury yachts. The three-bedroom apartment sleeps up to five people and has a fully equipped kitchen and tastefully designed lounge. See more information on VRBO
This apartment is an excellent choice for those wanting to stay in Barceloneta. Guests will love the private balcony, which faces the port for ocean views.
Beach lovers will love this neighborhood’s beach culture and proximity to the ocean. Young families will appreciate the quieter, more laidback vibe and easy beach access to give little ones some fun downtime. La Barceloneta is essentially the angel of Barcelona’s neighborhoods.
Things to do in Barceloneta
The streets of La Barceloneta themselves are worth visiting alone. This area of Barcelona was once mainly inhabited by fishermen. It has an almost Italian feel, with towering, pastel-colored apartment buildings, Juliet balconies, and a network of narrow streets below. La Barceloneta has a beautiful, authentic atmosphere.
You can enjoy a slower pace, spending your days at blink-and-you-miss-them taverns on alleyway corners and sunbathing on the beach.
It might be tempting, but try to squeeze in some sightseeing after you’ve had some quality relaxation time. The Museum of Catalan History is just a stone’s throw from La Barceloneta center. It is a great place to learn more about Catalonia’s story. For those unsure about the Spanish and Catalonian relationship, this attraction is a must-visit and highly eye-opening to the socio-political history of the region. The Museum of Catalan History also has a fantastic observation platform with port views.
La Barceloneta is where to stay in Barcelona if you want to be right on Barcelona’s coastline. The neighborhood has an authentic, laidback atmosphere and is the ideal spot for a relaxed beach holiday.
5. El Raval

VRBO: 1 bedroom apartment with inspiring views
This property is a beautiful VRBO option in the middle of Las Ramblas. It is an ideal spot for business travelers to stay in Barcelona. You are in the heart of the action – you even have a window overlooking Las Ramblas and Placa Catalunya. Located at the top of its building, the apartment has a fantastic vantage point for incredible city views.
Boutique hotels are lovely occasionally, but this apartment has all the homely comforts you quickly start to miss. You’ll have your own fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, and a bathroom with a bathtub to soak in. When it comes to breakfast, you can cook up a storm or head out to La Boqueria – just minutes away. See more on VRBO
Things to do in El Raval
El Raval is packed with culture, from museums to trendy restaurants. You’ll be within walking distance of the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, La Boqueria, and the Maritime Museum. Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter and La Barceloneta Beach are just a short stroll away.
The three attractions we’ve just listed are the best things to do in El Raval. The contemporary art museum is a top-rated attraction in Barcelona, and the entirely white-painted museum showcases bold, memorable artwork from the 1940s to the present day. It is a fun and funky place to appreciate artwork – whether you are an enthusiast or not.
La Boqueria is a massive indoor market set in a historic building of El Raval. It is famous for its food stalls, and you’ll find everything from cured meats to candied sweets. La Boqueria is one of the oldest markets in Barcelona, and people have been shopping there for centuries. We recommend visiting to treat yourself to a snack or lunch on the go.
Finally, the Maritime Museum is located near the port, at the bottom of El Raval. The museum is a true testament to Barcelona’s seafaring history. It includes a medieval harbor with a giant replica galleon and valuable artifacts.
El Raval’s intellectual but edgy vibe is perfect for those looking to enjoy Barcelona’s street style and culture. There’s just so much to do in this neighborhood – whether you want attractions, food, drink, or socializing. You can dine al fresco with tapas and seafood dishes when you aren’t exploring its attractions.
El Raval is where to stay in Barcelona if you love being surrounded by trendy and cultural action. The neighborhood is packed with great restaurants, museums, and bars. It is close enough to the Gothic Quarter and La Barceloneta to enjoy their best attractions as well, which is a great compromise.
6. Gracia
Gracia has the least central location of all these neighborhoods, and you’ll have to catch the metro to reach it (or walk for nearly an hour). The elegant suburb is a little more residential, with more local living than tourist crowds. Its 19th-century-built streets have a different style again from the medieval Gothic Quarter and modernist Eixample. You’ll find an indie atmosphere and a lazy trendiness, with plenty of cinemas, galleries, and wine bars. Gracia has a laidback indulgence and a focus on the good life.
So, what is so special about Gracia? Park Güell. Park Güell was what Gaudi planned to be a self-contained neighborhood.
The Best Hotels in Gracia
Luxury: Hotel Casa Fuster
Hotel Casa Fuster is a luxe five-star property in a Modernist-style building on the outskirts of Gracia. The property oozes sophistication, with a Mediterranean restaurant on-site and regular live jazz music. Hotel Casa Fuster’s rooftop outdoor swimming pool is another draw, and the pool has beautiful views over Barcelona.
Opt for a standard room or treat yourself to one of the suites, which include a living room and sometimes a balcony, sauna, and dressing room. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Mid-Range: Sonder Le Palacete
Sonder Le Palacete is a four-star hotel and is a fantastic mid-range accommodation choice set in a newly renovated 1922-built building. You’ll stay amongst original stone arches and balusters – prepare to be wowed.
Sonder Le Palacete is small, with only a handful of high-quality rooms, so it has an exclusive, quiet atmosphere. Each room features a handcrafted bed, a Nespresso machine, and living areas. If you want to upgrade, you can book a room with a freestanding tub and private terrace. Sonder Le Palacete is a fantastic place to stay in Gracia and provides excellent value for money. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Budget: Sant Jordi Hostels Gracia
Sant Jordi Hostels Gracia is where to stay in Barcelona on a budget. We’ve already covered its sister property in Eixample, Sant Jordi Hostels Rock Palace, so let’s look at this property in Gracia. Booking.com / TripAdvisor
Sant Jordi Hostels Gracia is very subtly bicycle-themed, with abstract decoration throughout the modern property. It has a funky, artsy vibe that is ideal for putting you in the mood to make friends. You can choose from a range of dorm rooms and use the lounge room and shared kitchen. Sant Jordi Hostels is a fun and sociable place to stay in Gracia.
VRBO: Beautiful house next to the Park
If you want to be next to Park Güell, this house is where to stay in Barcelona. The two-bedroom house sleeps up to four people and is an excellent choice for a family or group of friends. The interior is comfortable, with spacious rooms and tasteful furnishings. However, the winning feature is its outdoor patio.
The patio’s high walls guarantee privacy. You can use the outdoor furniture to enjoy warm summer evenings dining al fresco. If you are feeling adventurous, there’s even an outdoor oven. See more information on VRBO
Things to do in Gracia
Park Güell is the star attraction in this neighborhood in Barcelona and the beauty is you’ll be able to explore it all you want. The park consists of an array of mosaic-covered, bizarrely designed modernist buildings.
Today the park is one of the city’s most popular places to visit in Barcelona. By basing yourself in Gracia, you’ll be within walking distance of the park and can visit as many times as you want.
Gracia’s local vibe is perfect for relaxing into your Barcelona experience. You’ll find local tapas bars, restaurants, and boutique hotels around this area. You are only a metro stop or two away on the metro line from the city center anyway. And in Gracia, you can enjoy great tapas bars, attractions, and access to Park Güell.
In short, Gracia is where to stay in Barcelona if you want a good night’s sleep and to escape the hectic city center.
To Conclude
